Candidate information

We’ve pulled together all the information on the candidates for this election in one handy spreadsheet.

This is an excellent resource that can easily be turned into labels etc. and best of all, it’s available for free.

A list of current MLAs, details of their actions in the Assembly and a list of candidates for each constituency is also available on the site.

What is the point of looking at the candidates for the sectarian parties? They are all middle-of-the-road mediocrities, raised on division and retailing discrimination for their own tribe.

Yet, when I look around the community and voluntary sector, I see people who could make a real difference, in neighbourhoods, in youth clubs, with women’s groups and senior citizens groups - the list goes on. It’s time we got our hats and coats, hit the political trail and changed our tribal politics once and for all.

If you work in the sector and you think that politics is not for you, then you are selling yourself down the river. Get up, get out and make a difference!

you raise an interesting point. I agree that there are really articulate, dedicated people in our sector, many of whom would make excellent elected reps. But maybe they feel that they can also make a real difference to the causes they are passionate about by staying where they are?

Anyway, I can think of at least two well know voluntary/community sector faces running as candidates in this election - Stephen Nicholl for UUP and Anna Lo for Alliance. I am sure there are more? I’ll be doing a short video interview with Anna on Friday (as part of a series which will include all the main parties) and will be really interested to find out what motivated her to make leap from the community sector to party politics. it should be posted early next week.
